Portal I
Using a modified Xbox Kinect to track participant’s movements, an array of simple gestures allowed participants to open “windows” within a projection of time-lapse footage of clouds over the planes of the American Midwest. These windows revealed various “destinations”. When the portal is closed, the participant can choose new destinations. Music shifts from quietly expressive sounds (algorithmically generated while the portal is closed) to dramatic, ghostly dissonance as the portal opens in the projected landscape –these dissonant “portal voices” flowing around the participant courtesy of a multichannel speaker system.
